The Rolling Stones
While many people consider the Beatles the greatest rock band of all time, and they might just be, there is a justifiable debate on which band is the second greatest. While there are fans that would debate the pros and cons of such bands as Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin and even The Who, for many people, The Stones are the greatest band of all time.
For many, the band even eclipses the Beatles as the greatest band ever. While that may be up to debate and I wouldn't consider it the case because of the influence and originality and popularity of The Beatles, the Stones are still a very influential and important band.
Both bands had the majority of their hits, and released their greatest albums prior to the'70s, but both have continued to release new music over the decades since. Just turn on a classic rock station on the radio, and you won't need to listen long to hear one hit song or another by either of these bands. And both bands have had a tremendous impact on many of the rock bands that became popular in the years and decades that have past since they both came on the scene.
In the'60s The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were every where, from the radio to the Ed Sullivan show, from a 45 in the living room to the some of the largest concert venues in the world. The Beatles performed more of a pop rock style of music in their early albums, and then progressed to a more complex, and eclectic sound after they spent time in India, and also grew in their own personal lives. The Rolling Stones were influenced by early American rock, primarily by African-American artists, as well as blues and jazz. The styles of music created by these two iconic bands differed greatly, but both continue to be extremely successful.
The Beatles made the choice to call it quits when they were at the top of their game, at their most popular, fueling the fire with the consumers for the next four decades because they couldn't get enough of them. The Stones went the other way and continued making records and touring well past their creative prime. This can be good and bad. Bad because you never want to see a band or athlete or anyone with talent performing at anything less than 100%, but good in the fact that the fans still got to see the band. I am sure that there are millions of fans that would kill to see The Beatles at 50% of their abilities.

The Wonderful Harmony of Michale Buble
Michael Buble is a favorite artist for music lovers of big band, swing or contemporary. His songs are not original, as they have already been produced by other artists, however each one sounds new after he puts his magical touch to them.
Many say is voice is reminiscent from the Frank Sinatra era. He has an old sounds and a voice that makes you believe no matter what he sings it will be outstandingly enjoyable. His music is loved by many, whether it the skates that he adds to songs, or just his voice alone, people will stop just to hear him.
While listening to him sing, many find it hard to believe that Michale Buble is a Canadian. The American songs he sings are breathtaking, without any trace of an accent. Michael has been know to take standard favorites and make them into contemporary hits. He has even done duets with contemporary artists, including Nelly Furtado. You will always be able to find one or two contemporary tracks on his CD's, however all the tracks include that big band instrument sounds that he has become famous for.
The most known, and loved, album from Michael Buble is "Home". This album is one of a kind and complete with a few Michael Buble originals. Since the release of this album, fans have been anxiously awaiting another one. He has, however, done a small album release with Hallmark, some singles, and movie soundtracks. One single that was released was titled "Totally Buble", this was the soundtrack for the movie Totally Blonde, and there was another single that he cut, which was featured on the Spiderman movie soundtrack. Fans will be excited to hear, that I have just learned there is a new CD scheduled to be released later this year.
Michale Buble's new CD is set to be released just in time for your Christmas wish lists. This is a wonderful surprise for Buble fans, and they now have the hopes that a new concert tour is not far away. Watching Michael Buble, preform in person, is always a favorite for his fans, as he is incredible humorous, as well as a talented singer.
Michael Buble sings the kind of music that appeals to any gender, or age for that matter. Children have been known to sing along, as well as grandparents, and parents in between. No matter what type of music is your favorite, I am sure every true music lover would benefit from owning a Michael Buble album. If you love Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, or any of those types of singers, you will not be disappointed in Michael.
A New Season for 30 Rock
30 Rock is one of the most popular shows on television. It is the top two or three comedys on NBC, just behind The Office in popularity. It has entered its fourth season and is just as good as the first season. It is available on DVD, seasons 1 through 3 and is one of the best television shows worthy of adding to your collection.
This show is about a TV show shot at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The lead character is Liz Lemon who's played by Tina Fey who is a creator and writer of the show. Her character has minimum social niceties, is charged as head writer with keeping the rest of the characters out of trouble, and she's a workaholic.
Alec Baldwin plays the boss, he just likes to do the business not the problems so that's where Tina Fey's character Liz comes in, to take care of the issues. She has to handle the writers as well as the actors as they are all problem children.
On the show that Fey's character Liz writes the big star is Tracy Morgan, formerly of SNL, playing the character Tracy Jordan. This character doesn't have good sense and must be watched over constantly to avoid trouble. All of the other actors also display this lack of balance.
Tina and Alec play off each other perfectly and Tracy has found his niche. This is fun television and has matured gracefully as character development has happened over time. The DVD's make it easy to catch up to this season in order to enjoy it fully.
Wii Introduces Super Smash Bros
A new game from Wii is exciting even the hard core gamers who usually aren't Wii active. It's called Super Smash Bros and it is doing very well. It includes all of the favorite Nintendo characters, who all have their own special warrior skills. This game has numerous characters and if you progress, you'll unlock them as you go.
It includes all of the levels and stages you would expect plus some extra locals, but you can also create your own levels and share them. This can be played alone or with up to four players using the WiFi, and this is the most fun way to play, lots of competition.
The games is $50 but includes an unbelievable completely different adventure game. This game has its own story and unknowns to be unlocked. It also can be played alone or with friends, and is amazingly long and complex for an add on. For any other developer it could be a whole different game but you get your money's worth with Nintendo.
All in all, this is probably the best version of the Smash Bros. games to date. It also is the prettiest, with the colors and animations standing out in widescreen and looking beautiful. This is a fun and value packed release and fans of the series have been rewarded for their patience in waiting for this one. Starting an online match is very easy as the game will match you with players from around the world and it runs just as smoothly as playing with friends in the same room.
I still can't believe how much game they packed onto this one disc, it really is a marvel and a real value if you are looking to get tons of re-playability out of a game. This is the best in the series and should not be missed.
Metallica Rocks Again
When Metallica releases an album, it is usually cause for celebration. They have had a long run of success, with only a couple of speed bumps in the past twenty-five years. Most of their albums have been well received, the last one St. Anger being the only real exception. I chalk that one up to experimentation and a little bit of confusion on the direction of the band. It wasnt horrible, but it was not what the fans wanted. Artist should never make music for the sole benefit of the fans, and I will have to give it up to the band for their boldness.
This opened the gate for Death Magnetic, the newest release. For this release, they've moved back toward the familiar sound of heavy metal with good song writing. Do they lead the pack in metal? Not necessarily, but they have a huge reputation and following, so with the new release they regain their footing amongst the other metal bands.
From the late eighties to early nineties the metal scene has gone through some changes, Metallica felt more hard rock during the nineties. Now they wouldn't be in a new metal category or a heavy metal of the more recent bands. Some of the songs on this new album are really good and would work with their past song releases, and would fit in on previous album releases.
Unfortunately, Metallica will probably never reach the height of their first four releases, however, there are a lot of really good groups out there that fall in the same category. Most of the Rolling Stone hits were in the seventies. Their music since then has still been good but it's just not what it was then.
Some bands are capable of continuing to have hits until they go their separate ways but that's not normally the case. As they move into their forties and fifties, they don't reach fans the way they did when they were younger. It's admirable if a band can play that long and still have popularity. There are very few, Metallica, the Stones, Aerosmith and few others have accomplished this.
New Music From The Killers
Sophmore and junior releases for most performers can sink their careers, but The Killers have not suffered that fate as they have another outstanding album. The group from Las Vegas impressed all the critics with their first album in 2005. "Hot Fuss" moved up the charts and cemented them as a very hot act. Both rock fans and dance fans were drawn to this album due to the unusual mix of techno and rock.
The Killers followed a very changed artistic path for the next release, "Sam's Town," which proved to show they weren't a one sound group and could use different styles. Even though it had a very different tone, it still was a Killers album. In the scheme of things this release reached the same height and score as "Hot Fuss," but was such a different sound that it may have reached a whole new audience who'd not heard the first one.
After a quick cash in on some b-sides with last years "Sawdust," which for other bands would have been a-side, the new album released to huge anticipation and fanfare. "Day and Age" sounded like a Killers album should, but completely different than the first two albums. With new instruments and a more diverse sound in the songs that made the final cut on the album, it is exactly what a fan would want, and so much more. The songs sound more mature, less poppy, but more radio friendly than most of the songs on the last album.
If you've seen them live, these songs seem like they've been there all along, they mesh well with their past tracks. This indicates a group who are reaching their peak as the music on each new album improves and that in a live show the songs all flow together. They are good song writers, displaying tunes and lyrics that have power and emotion but are also fun to listen to.
The first two albums and this one are on similar accomplishment levels, but the future holds a lot of promise because their very best music is still out there. Do not miss a live show with The Killers, they give an awesome performance.
Lord of the Rings – How Many Versions?
Since the Hobbit movies by Peter Jackson won't be out for a while, it's a good time to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy again. The theater is where most people saw it for the first time, then we all had to get the DVD's, and then of course we had to then have the extended directors edition.
My vulnerability for this trilogy has cost me three times in the past and it may happen again. Why would this happen? Because the trilogy will be released on Blu Ray and no one can ignore that. But this one is not the extended directors cut, so if you liked the version they showed at the movies and you don't want extra scenes go ahead and purchase this release. But if that's what you prefer you may be content just to keep your original DVD's from a few years ago.
Those of us who've bought three times may wait on this one and get the extended version on Blu Ray. They will release it and it'll probably get released during the opening date of the first Hobbit film. I'll invest in the trilogy then as the Blu Ray will be exceptional in looks and sound, plus seeing all the furry Hobbit feet will be very satisfying for us nerds who never get enough Lord of the Rings.
There was some extra content in the original releases but nothing like the extended versions. They had so much more content that fans of the books wanted to have on the movie. The fans had a picture in their heads from reading the books and they wanted to see if it translated the same as the directors version.
No one doubts that Peter Jackson in the most intense fan of the series, his care and talent showed in the wonderful adaptations he brought to the screen. I have no doubt that he will extend the same expertise to the Hobbit movies, but while we wait continue to watch the extended directors version you already have and wait on the Blu Ray version. If you must see it in HD, there's always the option of renting it from the store or borrowing it from a friend who didn't wait.
Street Fighter
With all the different fighting games that have been released over the years, and on countless systems, it is hard to pick the best of the best. One of the series that has stood out above the rest is Tekken. The Tekken series has gotten better and better each installment. There has just been an arcade release of the seventh installment in Japan and will be coming stateside very soon as well as to our home consoles. In the mean time, we will have to get our fighting fix with the new Street Fighter game.
Street Fighter 4, released on both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, has been getting rave reviews from numerous gaming publications. Even more important than the publications is the fans approval of the game, since the fans of the original games love this installment it can be considered a success.
Fans have started falling in love with the characters all over again. All of the original are back with a few new news in their mist. Along with the characters, all their signature moves have followed as well. The series really hit its stride with the second installment of Street Fighter, which was released into arcades in the early nineties. Due to the popularity of the game many sequels were made, as well as live action movies. Although the movies were not a huge success, the gaming fans enjoyed watching their favorite characters and moves come to life.
In Street Fighter 4, the graphics were updated, but kept looking like the original. Original characters look new again, and still retain their classic influence. Anyone who has ever played a Street Fighter game will be able to pick up the controller and get right to action, as the fighting feels new, but somehow familiar.
A great added feature to the new Street Fighter game is the ability to challenge people from all over the world, with an Internet hookup. Its the perfect way to test your skills and for suitable competitors.
Guns N Roses New Sound Still Rocks
There are plenty of naysayers out there decrying the new Guns N Roses album. The complaint is that it doesn't sound the same. And that's not so bad. I think intentions were to migrate to a newer sound.
The older music, especially Appetite for Destruction, the first G n R album was about as perfect a debut album that could have been made. It was an almost perfect mix of glam rock mixed with some punk influence and a healthy helping of I dont give a crap attitude. It was loud, brash and arrogant in it presentation and in its excess. In a word-perfect. It didnt get any better than Appetite.
After the raging success of Attitude, the two Illusion albums allowed the new millionaire boys to branch out a little bit artistically and try new sounds. Some fans felt the dirty, rough back alley sound had been lost to fancy production techniques but time has treated the Illusion releases well and they stand strong in the lineup. And with the new Chinese Democracy release 15 years later, we hear yet another new sound. Same old Axl, but updated to keep up with the times. Some heads are reeling.
Axl is the only returning original member and that's just fine because he'd likely make them all nuts anyway. This release is clearly an Axl Rose album, even if the cover says Guns N Roses. He may have miscalculated this one, because if it only had his name on the cover, it may have been received a little better. Die hard fans need to listen to this one a few times through before they make their final determination. The sounds are there. The riffs are there. This is Axl Rose back in fine form.
The album opens up with the first two songs reminding listeners why they bought it. The title track Chinese Democracy, rocks and seems familiar to most, since it has evolved over several years without ever being released until now. The album is able to create a bridge between the last album and itself - not an easy task. No matter if you like this latest effort from Axl and crew or not, you must admit that it still awakens your senses that the mass of "rock" drivel out there today can not do.
